Plug-in Grant Changes

The Government has announced cuts to the plug-in car and van grants which will begin from today (15/12/2021).

The Plug-in Grant scheme aims to help those who are struggling to afford an electric car. It also adds as an incentive for buyers to choose EVs over petrol or diesel vehicles.

Changes to the scheme today has seen the Plug-in Car Grant get reduced from £2,500 to £1,500. The eligibility criteria for an electric car has also fallen from £35,000 to £32,000, including VAT and delivery charges.

The Plug-in Van Grant for small vans (2.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight or less) has been reduced from £3,000 to £2,500 and for large vans (2-3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight or less) it's been reduced from £6,000 to £5,000. There have been no changes to the grant rates for vehicles that weigh over 3.5 tonnes.

A surge in electric vehicle sales this year is thought to be the reason for the changes. The new rates will focus the grant incentives on more affordable vehicles.
