Fisker Ocean Ready to Make Waves in the UK

The Fisker Ocean is a brand-new EV hailing from California that is ready to take on the successful Tesla Model Y.

In this article, we’ll go over everything you need to know about the latest EV to arrive from across the pond.

Key facts

  • 440-mile range
  • 3.9-second 0-60mph
  • £60,880 for Extreme trim
  • Arriving in the UK this year
  • SolarSky roof can provide additional range
  • Sustainable interior

Specifications

Full specifications are yet to be released but there are some details that we do know.

There’ll be three trim levels available from launch named the Sport, Ultra, and Extreme. There’ll also be a special launch edition One trim that’ll be limited to just 5,000 units.

The Extreme variant of the Ocean is what’s currently grabbing headlines because of its 440-mile range, 550bhp and 3.6 second 0-60mph time. Its hyper-range battery means that you can drive from London to Glasgow on a single charge.

This range is particularly impressive when you consider that the Ocean is an SUV. Many of its range rivals in the current market are aerodynamic saloons like the Tesla Model S (405 miles) and the Mercedes-Benz EQS (453 miles).

The Ultra variant has the same dual motor all-wheel drive powertrain as the Extreme but comes with a lower 379-mile range and slower 4.2 second 0-60mph time. Meanwhile, the more affordable Sport option has a 273-mile range and 7.4 second 0-60mph time.

We don't know the size of the batteries being used yet but for a 440-mile range, a battery around 100kWh would be expected.

Later down the line, the American carmaker plans to add an off-road derivative of the Ocean called the Force E.

Exterior

Fisker says the Ocean’s design combines sports car and SUV styling elements.

Striking pumped-up wheel arches gives the EV an athletic look whilst very thin front and rear lights make the Ocean appear sharp and modern. A narrow full-width light bar connects the headlights and sits above a large air intake.

20-inch alloy wheels fill the space left by the chunky wheel arches. 22-inch alloys are also available.

At the back, the rear window is slimmer than the other car windows. This is to make the Ocean appear less boxy and more streamlined like a sports car.

The Ocean is 4,780mm long, meaning it's similar in length to the Tesla Model Y and the BMW X3. The wheelbase is 2,920mm which is large enough to fit Fisker’s large batteries.

Interior & technology

The interior is made entirely out of vegan and sustainable materials. T-shirts were used to make the seat fabric and plastic bottles were recycled to make the flooring.

A new technology called 'freeform' has been used to create seamless front seats and a two-spoke steering wheel sits in front of a slim digital display. The Ocean’s interior is very simple and minimal with few physical buttons to project a feeling of luxury.

On the middle of the dash, there’s a 17.1-inch Revolve infotainment screen that can be flipped into landscape mode whilst parked so that passengers can watch movies.

There’s plenty of legroom in the back helped by a floating centre console. There'll also be around 566 litres of boot space on the five-seater Fisker. The American Automaker has said there is enough room for a third row of seats and that a 7-seater model is in the pipeline.

An optional SolarSky roof is one of the more innovative bits of tech on the new Ocean. Fisker says that this full-length rooftop solar panel can provide as much as 2,000 additional miles of range per year if you live in sunnier climes.

A special California Mode is another handy feature for sunny weather. This allows drivers to simultaneously open all of the windows, including the rear window, to invite in the cool summer breeze.

Battery swapping tech, that's gaining traction in China, is also in Fisker's plans. This would allow motorists to drive into a swapping station bay and come out less than 10 minutes later with a new fully charged battery.

Release date & pricing

The Ocean is set to arrive in the UK by the end of 2023 and could arrive as early as the summer. The first 440-mile launch edition Ocean has already been delivered to a customer in Denmark earlier this month.

Pricing will start from £35,970 with the Sport derivative. The Ultra trim is currently priced at £49,880 and the range-topping Extreme trim will set you back £60,880.
