Vauxhall Corsa becomes UK’s best-selling car in 2021 so far

According to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), 26,215 Corsas have been registered in the first 7 months of 2021.

This means that the Vauxhall Corsa becomes the best-selling new car in the UK, beating the popular Ford Fiesta.

On top of this, the Vauxhall Corsa-e leads the way in the all-electric supermini class, with 3,120 registrations in 2021. This is positive news for Vauxhall, who plan to have an electrified variant across its model line-up by 2024.

The Managing Director at Vauxhall, Paul Wilcox, said “As a British brand, it’s fantastic to see the Corsa remain the UK’s best-selling new car. With electric sales continuing to grow at a rapid pace, we’re proud to see the new Corsa-e retain its spot at the top of the sales charts, bringing affordable all-electric options to our customers.”

Trailing the Corsa in the year-to-date sales charts are the Ford Fiesta (23,521), Volkswagen Golf (21,970), Mercedes A-Class (21,684) and Ford Puma (20,853).

The Ford Puma particularly impressing as the best-selling SUV, especially when considering that it has only been on sale for little more than a year.

The data has also highlighted some interesting trends. July sales this year are down 29.5% from what they were in July 2020, with both the pandemic and global semiconductor shortage being referenced as factors by SMMT.

However, despite this dip, 2021 is performing much better than 2020. New car sales are up by 24.7% for the year-to-date and the rising popularity of electric vehicles can be seen in the data with there being a 117.4% increase in new EV sales from 2020.
