Ultra Low Emission Zone

London are to introduce the Ultra Low Emission Zone in under two months time, which will require cars and vans to meet emission standards or pay a charge. This will replace the existing T-Charge, in addition to the weekday Congestion Charge and the Low Emission Zone Charge.

The change will start from 8 April 2019, where a central ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) will be implemented in the same area as the Congestion Charge. This will extend from the 25th October 2021, where it will reach up to North and South Circular roads, including the aforementioned zone.

For lorries and other vehicles over 3.5T, the Low Emission Zone will extend to the entirety of London from the 26th of October 2020.

What are the daily charges for the Ultra Low Emission Zone?

  • £12.50 for most vehicle types, including cars, motorcycles and vans (up to and including 3.5 tonnes)
  • £100 for heavier vehicles, including lorries (over 3.5 tonnes) and buses/coaches (over 5 tonnes)

Why are the government establishing an Ultra Low Emission Zone?

The main concern for the government is the air pollution affecting the health of all Londoners. Road transport is the most significant source of emissions, damaging the health of those in these communities. Remarkably, at least 360 primary schools in the area are currently exceeding safe and legal levels of pollution.
