New DS E-Tense Performance Concept

DS has unveiled their latest re-work of its E-Tense concept that was first displayed at the 2016 Geneva motor show.

The E-Tense may not necessarily be in the manufacturer’s production plans but the new concept coupe does display some very innovative technologies that could make their way into future models.

Their latest iteration of the E-Tense features engineering from the DS Performance Formula E race team. DS has been involved in Formula E since 2015 and as a result, will be looking to incorporate the latest electric and performance technology into their upcoming cars.

A twin-motor powertrain, with a 335bhp motor at the front and a 469bhp motor at the back, combine for a total of 805bhp and a maximum torque output of 8,000Nm.

Performance details have not been confirmed, but don’t be surprised if this concept will be capable of going 0-62mph in under 3 seconds.

On top of its cutting edge motor technology, the E-Tense shows off the latest in battery innovation.

Created in partnership with Total Energies, DS have placed a ‘compact’ battery into a carbon-aluminium ‘envelope’ at the rear of the vehicle that features a thermal management system with unique battery chemistry. This helps to create a powerful regeneration system.

DS claim that this could open up “new avenues for future generations of production vehicle”. These new technologies will be useful for DS as they prepare to only release battery electric vehicles from 2024 onwards.

The front of the E-Tense displays styling cues that DS intend to continue on its next generation of cars.

Thomas Chevaucher, DS Performance division boss, said: “The aim is to apply the experience acquired in Formula E and the expertise that we’ve taken from our international titles to a project that predicts the high-performance electric car of tomorrow.”
