Innovative Cars: Tesla Model S

Perhaps the most exciting car to be produced in the past decade, Tesla broke new boundaries with its Model S.

After its release in 2012 (entering UK markets in 2014), the Model S elevated the EV market. Its incredible array of specifications and high tech features has made fully electric cars far more desirable to own.

With the appearance of a stylish saloon car, this Tesla offers a zero-emission vehicle that looks and feels like a supercar. It showed that EVs could be cool whilst attaining speeds that match some of the fastest cars on the planet.

At launch, the S came as standard with a 60kWh battery, capable of a range of 242 miles. Since launch, larger batteries have been fitted allowing for much further ranges, with the latest upgrade expected to push the 520-mile mark. The impressive range on its own is enough to make this a leading-edge car in the electric bracket.

Not only is its range so good but when charging on Tesla’s growing supercharging network, you can get 200 miles worth of power in just 30 minutes.

The original standard Model S could achieve 0-60mph in just 4.2 seconds. Since then the Standard and Performance models have been dropped and replaced with Long Range Plus, Plaid, and Plaid+ models.

The current Plaid versions can go a blistering 1.99 seconds from a stand-still to 60mph. These speeds are truly in supercar territory and have revolutionised the EV scene.

If all that wasn’t enough the Model S feels like a car from the future. In the cabin, you are met with a touchscreen the size of two iPads, plenty of space in the front and back with adjustable seats and a whole host of futuristic features.

Self-driving, auto lane changing, auto parking and a Smart Summon feature, that can get your Tesla to come and find you in a car park, rubber stamps this vehicle as nothing short of revolutionary.

Since 2012 Tesla has continued to push the limits of what’s currently possible in the automotive industry. The Model X, Model 3 and Model Y have since been released offering different ranges, shapes and sizes.

The new Tesla Roadster is also due for 2022 which is expected to beat the speeds set by the latest Model S Plaid versions.
